Angra’s historic centre, which is easy to explore by foot, begins at the natural harbour and rises gently to the north, the typical whitewashed and red-roofed houses of its suburbs spreading picturesquely on the soft slopes of the green hills in the backdrop. A major point of orientation is the central Praça da Restauração or Praça Velha that is reached following one of the town’s oldest and liveliest streets, Rua de Lisboa (or Rua Direita), which starts at the harbour.
