Convento and Igreja de São Gonçalo
Founded in 1545, the Convento de São Gonçalo was the first convent on the island and it is also one of the largest. It has two cloisters and holds some interesting wall paintings, depicting scenes from the bible, in its interior. The convent church, which looks rather unpretentious and bulky on the exterior, boasts Hispanic-Moorish style ceiling paintings, a gilded wood-carved high-altar, glazed-tiles wall decorations, paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries and a beautiful silver cross.
