Palace of the Captain Generals (Palácio dos Capitães-Generais)

When the Jesuit order was expelled from Portuguese territory in 1759, this former 17th-century Jesuit College was transformed into a feudal residence for the island’s captain generals - a function, which it served from 1766 to 1831. This impressive palace, with a fountain and a splendid dragon tree in its courtyard, mutated over the time to a kind of museum with valuable collections of furniture, paintings, sculptures as well as carriages and cabs – among other objects. There is also a room featuring man-size oil paintings of all the kings coming from the noble house of Bragança and even the bedroom, where King Pedro IV slept when he was on the island, can be visited.

The adjacent 17th-century church Nossa Senhora do Carmo, or simply called the ‘Igreja do Colégio’ as it formerly belonged to the Jesuit College, is richly decorated with gilded carved wood, sculptures, paintings and glazed-tiles panels from the 17th and 18th centuries… it actually boasts one of the best collections of Dutch tiles outside the Netherlands.
