Some more sights to visit

If you still have some time on hand, there are a few more sights, which deserve a visit or at least a closer look. Most of them are religious, such as the 18th century church of Misericórdia with its austere façade, situated in front of the new marina; the Gothic church of São Sebastião dating from the 15th century and marking the site of the first settlement of the island; the 16th-century Baroque-style church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição with a gilded wood-carved chancel or the Solar de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (also called Solar da Família Canto e Castro), an impressive 16th-century manor house, which was the residence of the Navy Purveyor and holds the largest private chapel in the archipelago. Among many more remarkable 16th- and 17th-century manor houses to view, there is also a new park, the Jardim dos Corte Reais, opened in 2004, with a pavilion-kiosk and a viewpoint, providing fantastic views on Angra’s impressive bay.
