Alto da Memória
This obelisk was erected on the site of the first fortress of the archipelago, the Castelo de São Luís, in memory of the presence of the liberal King Dom Pedro IV in Angra during the constitutional conflicts. The foundation stone for this monument was laid in 1845 after the old castle (15th century), originally built to protect the upper part of the town, had been torn down. From the Miradouro da Memória, a viewpoint on an altitude of 87 metres, provides superb panoramic views of the town and the Monte Brasil.
