Angra do Heroísmo Museum

Today, this museum is established in the former Convento de São Francisco. It displays interesting collections of furniture, ceramic and porcelain, paintings, sculptures, music, navigation instruments, coins, medals, weapons as well as carriages and landaus and it has also an ethnological section where Terceira’s history is documented. Included in the museum complex is the adjoining Igreja de São Franciso, also known as Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Guia. The present church, which was built in the Neoclassic style in the second half of the 18th century, has three naves and boasts some remarkable treasures in its interior, such as gilded cedar wood ceilings in the sacristy, beautiful gilded wood-carved retables as well as some fine glazed-tiles panels, paintings and statues. It also holds the tombs of Paulo da Gama, Vasca da Gama’s brother who, in 1499, had died from a sickness after the return from his first voyage to India, and João Vaz Corte-Real, a famous Portuguese north-Atlantic explorer of the 15th century.
