Caldeira de Guilherme Moniz
South of Terceira’s centre lies the Caldeira de Guilherme Moniz, with a perimeter of about 15 km the largest crater of the archipelago. Despite its size, it is not very impressive, as erosion has left its traces and big parts of the crater walls have collapsed. Its rounded edges, covered with trees, drop steeply mainly on its western flank, while its southern edge is bordered by the Serra do Morião, which, with its Pico Rosto, reaches a height of about 630 m. The plain at the bottom of the caldera, which is accessible on a path from its north side, has a few pastures where cattle are raised.
