Square of 5 de Outubro
Opposite the church of São José, you will find the busy Praça 5 de Outubro, an almost quadratic square boasting a pavilion and an old ironwood tree, planted in 1870, in its centre. Since 1999, the Monumento ao Emigrante by Alvaro Raposo Franga adorns the south side of the square. This square is a popular meeting place for the locals, especially on summer evenings, with often concerts taking place. It is also the centre for many festive activities on the occasion of the important Festa de Santo Cristo dos Milagres (fifth Sunday after Easter).
