Palace of Sant’Ana & Parque José do Canto

Today seat of the Presidency of the Regional Government, for which you need a permission to visit, this large neo-classical Palácio de Sant’Ana from the 19th century contains paintings recalling the illustrious visit made by King Carlos and Queen Dona Amélia in 1901; precious furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries and magnificent glazed tiles collections as well as panels by the Portuguese artist Jorge Colaço. It is located northeast of the centre in a very attractive private park, the Parque José do Canto, where the former residence of the park founder, which was transformed to a hotel, can also be found. Built in the 19th century and consisting of two major parts, which both can be visited, this is one of the largest botanical gardens of the island. Displaying a myriad of splendid specimens of the archipelago’s flora, this park is a true oasis and should not be missed!
