Vila da Praia da Graciosa / São Matéus

The village of Praia – whose name has been changed to its parish name São Matéus in 2004, but continues to be called Praia among the locals – is despite its small size the second most important place on the island due to its harbour. Having been extended by a large mole for cargo ships in the 80s of the last century and recently also with a yacht harbour, the village’s white sandy beach, from which it originally took its name, has considerably shrunk, but still represents the main bathing venue for the islanders during the summer months. From the village, the beach and the harbour cannot be seen, as they are hidden by a massive jetty wall, built a long time ago for protection from sea storms and pirates, and the beach can only be accessed through a bulky gate. Right opposite the harbour lies the Ilhéu da Praia, one of the numerous tiny islets surrounding the island’s shores. Home to many birds’ species, these islets have become protected nature reserves. Further along the coast, at the southern end of the village, you will find the attractive sandy bays of Fonte da Areia, another popular bathing venue.

The only notable sight to visit in Praia’s centre is its parish church, which is dedicated to Saint Matthew. Originally built in the 16th century, the Igreja de São Matéus went through several alterations and extensions during its existence until it was completely reconstructed in the 19th century. Its interior houses a remarkable wood-carved high altar, some as beautiful lateral altars and a few magnificent paintings from the 16th and 17th century, some of them from the Flemish school. Adjacent to this church is also a Holy-Ghost chapel.

A short trip south of the village centre up to the little chapel of Nossa Senhora da Saúde rewards everybody who makes his way up here with beautiful views over the village and its islet.
