Flamengo & Jardim Botánico do Faial

About 2 km northwest of Horta, passing the 267 m high Monte Carneiro with a beautiful viewpoint, lies the Jardim Botânico do Faial, a small botanical garden with a lake. With its enchanting location in the valley of Flamengos, this garden displays many endemic and endangered plants. Continuing another 2 km towards the interior, the sleepy village of Flamengos, idyllically embedded in a beautiful hilly landscape, is reached. Early settlers preferred this area because of its extremely fertile land and its location further inland, as it could not be spotted from the sea. Once a flourishing agricultural village with some pretty houses, it has nothing much to offer today, as many of the most attractive houses were destroyed by the 1998 earthquake.
