Furnas do Enxofre
Further into the interior of the island, on the way towards the cave of Algar do Carvão, are some more living witnesses of Terceira’s volcanic origin to be discovered. These are the sulphur fumaroles of Furnas do Enxofre, located almost in the geographic centre of the island at 600 m above sea level. The earlier in the morning because of the lower temperatures - you get to this place, the more mystical the sight of this spectacle of hot steams emanating from numerous springs in spirals, spinning in the air and finally evaporating in lunar silence.
