Church of São Pedro

A bit further east along the coastal Avenida Infante Dom Henrique, you will find the parish church Igreja de São Pedro with its attractive façade and a churchyard providing a splendid view over the harbour. Construction works already started in the 15th century, but it took more than two centuries to finish this church, where, despite the many changes made to the initial structure over the time, its original precious gilded woodcarvings, among which a richly ornamented high altar, can still be seen. Among other treasures, a beautiful statue of the Virgin Mary ‘of the Pains’, several images and reliquaries from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, the painting ‘Feast of Pentecost’ by the Portuguese artist Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho, beautiful ornate windows as well as, in the sacristy, some touching votive offerings from sailors can be admired.
