Carlos Machado Museum
Not far off the Public Library, you will find the Museu Carlos Machado, founded in 1880 and since 1930 installed in the former Convento de Santo André dating from the 16th century. This museum, which today is considered one of the most notable museums of the Azores, started originally with collections in natural history (particularly zoology), botany, geology and mineralogy. With the sections of regional art and ethnography being added later, the patrimonial importance of this museum increased considerably. When the museum was moved to the former convent, the collections were extended to jewellery, glazed tiles, porcelain, toys, paintings, sculptures and folk art. Especial mentioning deserves a group of oil paintings from the Portuguese school from the 16th century as well as the collection of contemporary art.
