Castelo Branco

About 10 km west of Horta lies Castelo Branco, a typical rural village that since the 1998 earthquake, where it was badly damaged, has – apart from its location nearby the airport and the stunning rock massif of Castelo Branco, from which it takes its name – only a church, a couple of impérios and a tiny fishing port to offer. The biggest employer in this area is doubtlessly the airport, which played an important role in the island’s development since it was inaugurated in 1971. Extended and modernized in 2001, it now has the status of an international airport, on which all hopes for a growing tourism industry to the island are based. West of the village lies the Ponta de Castelo Branco or widely known only as Castelo, a prominent rock massif that projects far into the sea and got its name from the whitish colour of its rocks. This area has become a favourite bird-nesting place.

Varadouro

This is a pretty, little summer resort, with a nice natural swimming pool surrounded by jagged rocks, where rich immigrants have their summer residences.
