Lagoa

Because of the richness of its soils, Lagoa quickly developed into an important agricultural region since the first settlers arrived. In the 18th century, its wealth increased even more due to the flourishing orange exportations, its port playing a significant role in the trade traffic. Then appeared the first industries, in particular a distillery, and the first pineapple plantations and in the second half of the 19th century, Lagoa became also an important centre for the pottery industry. Despite its wealth during passed centuries, Lagoa is not endowed with many interesting historic structures.

Worth a visit is the Igreja de Santa Cruz, a 16th-century church, which was rebuilt in 18th century. Notable are the vaults of its sanctuary and the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, both in Manueline style. Another interesting church is the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário. Originally dating from the 16th century, it was enlarged in the 17th century and houses a remarkable collection of sculptures from the 18th century, created by the Portuguese artist Machado de Castro. Also deserving special mentioning is the beautiful Baroque Façade of the Franciscan Convent, erected in the middle of the 18th century.
