Caloura

The next point of interest on the south coast continuing west towards Ponta Delgada is Calouro, former Vale de Cabaços, a picturesque fishing village, prettily situated in a small and narrow creek, sheltered by a high cliff that is overgrown with lush vegetation, amidst vineyards and protecting black basalt stone walls. Also reputed for its important Centre for Diving and Marine Life Observation, this village boasts a remarkable Baroque structure from the 16th and 17th centuries, the Convento de Caloura, which is today in private hands and can only be visited with the owner’s permission. In the convent’s church, Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Dores, originated the cult of Christ of the Miracles on the island when Pope Paul II offered the image of Christ to the nuns in 1530. To protect the statue from frequent pirate attacks in those days, the statue was transferred to Ponta Delgada’s chapel of Nossa Senhora da Esperança in 1541.
