Igreja do Colégio de Todos-os-Santos (All Saints Church)

Behind the Jardim Antero de Quental, which is always brightly lit when the night falls, lies the All Saints Church, probably the most beautiful Baroque structure on the island. Founded already in the 16th century, the present church’s construction, meant to be part of the ancient Jesuit College, started only in the first half of the 18th century, with the bombastic frontispiece remaining unfinished, as, in 1759, the Jesuits were chased out of Portugal on the orders of the Marques de Pombal. Striking already from far is its impressive Baroque façade, behind which houses a majestic pulpit and side altars, sumptuous examples of Baroque artistic expression in a profusion of fauna and flora motifs.
