Urzelina

About 10 km south of Velas, past the airport, lies Urzelina with a charming little centre and some beautiful small bays that made it the island’s most popular bathing venue during the summer months. Badly damaged during the volcanic eruption in 1808, the town was almost completely rebuilt and a new church was erected after the lava had buried the old church. From the old church remained only its bell tower that sticks out curiously from the lava, surrounded by hibiscus, aloes, rose bushes, banana and other exotic trees. Near the small harbour, which has quite a large swimming pool, remains of a 17th-century fort can still be seen. East of the harbour, beneath a fisher’s cabin, the Furna das Pombas, an about 100 m long, quite impressive sea grotto, which during the summer months can be visited by boat, is located.
