Ponta dos Rosais

The scarcely populated western tip of the island, which is marked by the Ponta dos Rosais – a steep, about 200 m high, sharply pointed headland with the ruins of an old lighthouse – features the beautiful natural reserve of Parque das Sete Fontes, embedded in softly undulated hilly landscapes. This large nature park with a chapel, several preserves and a nice picnic area is a popular place for recreational outings. In the surroundings, there are some beautiful natural belvederes offering magnificent views of the north coast. Also nearby, on the northwest coast, lies the Fajã do João Dias, one of the most idyllically located fajãs in the western part of the island. This fajã, which can only be reached by foot, has a large, beautiful black sand beach adjoining in the west.
