Calheta
Marking the centre of the southern coast, Calheta is the island’s second biggest town. It is an appealing little coastal town in a beautiful, tranquil setting, with its neat houses stretching along the coast and climbing up the slopes of the high surrounding cliffs, enhancing them with beautiful colours. Besides a few old manorial houses that survived the earthquake of 1980 and the 17th-century parish church with an attractive façade, there is not much sightseeing to do here. Calheta’s harbour was extended in recent years to enable the landing of bigger ships making it now the second port of the island yet, it still remains a small port with a charming ambiance of past times. The island’s only ethnographic museum where visitors can learn about the local history, culture and traditions can also be found in Calheta.
