East of Pico Alto & São Lourenço

East of Pico Alto
lies the picturesque village of Santa Barbara with its lovely indigo blue houses dispersed on the surrounding green slopes. Probably the prettiest village of the island, it boasts an appealing 17th-century church. With its ambiance of great tranquillity and serenity, this village also provides very pleasant walks to explore its magnificent surroundings.

Continuing east towards the coast, you will reach the peaceful village of São Lourenço, superbly located above a bay with small white-sanded beaches and turquoise water. This village with its pretty white houses only gets more animated in summer, with people enjoying all kinds of leisure activities on its beaches. At the exit of the village is a viewpoint, the Miradouro do Espigão, which provides excellent views of the bay and the vast vineyards covering the surrounding slopes, neatly divided by black basalt fences. Offshore lies another attraction, the tiny Romeiro islet, which consists of an interesting grotto, featuring stalactites and stalagmites, and an interior natural mooring. This islet can be visited by boat from São Lourenço.

The northern most point of the island marks the Ponta do Norte, a headland providing superb views across magnificent landscapes, the north coast and the islet of Lagoinhas and, when the weather is good, it is even possible to see the neighbour island São Miguel.
